The simplest, traditional recipe is usually comprised of a drained canned of tuna mixed with any kind of pasta and mayonnaise.
But think of the variations. This meal can be extravagant and elegant or quite down-home country and simple.
The pasta can be homemade from fresh ingredients made with your pasta machine or by hand. The pasta can be purchased freshly made at most grocery stores or you can buy dried boxed pasta.
The tuna can be purchased fresh at the fish market and many grocery stores, or you can buy canned tuna.
Tuna and Pasta salads and casseroles can be made to include fresh vegetables to make it a complete one-dish meal. Chopped broccoli is one of my favorites to add to tuna and pasta salad. Chopped green and red peppers are also a colorful and tasty addition. Think out of the box: green zucchini, summer squash, eggplant, cucumber, celery, yellow, red or green onions, scallions, cloves of garlic.
You can also use canned vegetables if you do not have fresh vegetables on hand. Gently mix in a can of peas or canned carrots.
Tuna and pasta casseroles and salads can be flavored in many different ways. A little salt and pepper is all that is needed if you don't have a wide variety of spices. When experimenting with new herbs and spices, add just a little to a small portion of the meal and taste test before adding it to the entire entree. You can add fresh chopped parley and other herbs fresh your garden, or from the grocery store. Dried herbs and spices can also be used.
Tuna and Pasta meals can be made to serve hot or cold. They store well for a few days in the refrigerator. They are a pleasant dish to make ahead of time to bring to a pot luck supper, dish-to-pass, or covered dish, whatever your part of the country calls a gathering a folks sharing food together.
Best of all they are affordable to make and usually can be made by substituting a recipe with what you already have on hand.
